A Happy-Healthful-Hopeful New Year to You and Yours!

Be encouraged by a few CC stories about the past year, and my highest hopes for 2009, both for myself, others, and for Charities Challenge, “at this time of the rolling year”*.

(Coach Jeanne’s cancer and my 2xTHR comeback is remarkable…Imagine us as RxExercise Ambassadors crossing the Golden Gate in 2008 with our CC Team. Both of our personal physicians commend us for our exercise regimen, athletic activities, and marvel how few of their patients are so successful with their post-surgery comebacks. Yes, exercise is powerful medicine & encouraging others every step of our ways is highly motivating and inspiring to oh-so many! Please consider joining a CC RxExercise Ambassador Team in 2009, too.)

3 years ago during the darkest days of winter I wrote the following note to many of you about how I was moving through my challenges with advanced osteoarthritis, disability, and 2x Total Hip Arthroplasty: “…December 19 [2005] I’ll be undergoing my second Total Hip Replacement. A genetic disease caused my premature painful degenerative joint disease, disability, and progressive osteoarthritis. I am more anxious about this surgery, and the uncertainties of recovery, than I was three years ago [2002] before my first THR. I know how much work I have to do...But, I’m motivated to make a comeback. I just don’t know how far back I may come.

Well, I’m pleased to still report at the end of 2008 that I’m making a continuing comeback well beyond what I or my doctors imagined.

I’m happily continuing my daily “comeback” from arthritis and metal hips joints prostheses challenges to a happy-healthier quality of life because of my own RxExercise, my exercise prescription encouraged by my fellow CCrs and Friends of CC like you. I haven’t had to “go it alone”; I’ve benefited daily by CCrs inspiring by-my-side training and racing camaraderie, and I’m counting on such continuing encouragement in 2009. Thank you all!

So, thanks for your past and continuing encouraging support to me and CC’s RxExercise Mission.

I’m asking you to continue being supportive to CC, to me, and to so many others with life and health challenges by making a tax-deductible contribution to CC that will help CC to continue delivering our uniquely effective RxExercise Programs, Events, and Active Partnerships.

Yes! My RxExercise is the most powerful prescription making the biggest difference in my general health and the management of my chronic arthritis, allowing me to live well beyond joint replacements. RxExercise, still relieving me of dependency on any other drugs, helps me to improve my heart and mental health, reduce my predisposition to depression, hypertension, hyper-lipidemia, diabetes and obesity risks. Yes, I’ve been health-challenged.

Like so many other health-challenged CCrs and Friends of CC, I’m living well beyond my challenges with the help of your active encouragement. Your support makes a daily difference in thousands of lives served by CC. Way to make a significant healthy difference every day.

Ask anyone with serious health challenges if they get discouraged. You’ll discover how irreplaceably important being actively encouraging it is to those of us who are health-challenged. That’s the “Charities Challenge”. Your ongoing active encouragement saves lives!

6 years ago I went through my first Total Hip Replacement. At that very same time, I was so saddened by my friend and fellow Coach Jeanne DeMartino’s cancer diagnosis, surgery and therapies.

Within a month of beginning our own challenging diseases, therapies and comebacks we founded Charities Challenge, along with several actively caring friends, in order to help countless others meet their health-challenges with RxExercise.

Now, nearly six years later, Charities Challenge is more effectively reaching so many more with the Power of RxExercise Programs, Events, and Active Partnerships. (Go to CC web site to see our growing RxExercise reach in support of so many happier-healthier challenged individuals who, like Jeanne and me, are “living well beyond” their chronic disease challenges, too!)

Please help us to achieve more CC successes, to serve many more health-challenged individuals in 2009 by doing two things today, “Taking the RxExercise Challenge” with us, in sustaining CC.

First, make a tax-deductible charitable contribution to Charities Challenge today. CC will continue delivering more quality-of-life-enhancing active RxExercise leadership programs, especially to those with health challenges.

Secondly, I’d love to be able to read a personal note of encouragement from you. So, on the reverse side of the enclosed CC Donation Form please jot a personal encouraging note to me. Even if you can’t afford to send a CC contribution right now, please still send me a note of encouragement in the post-paid envelope, because your words are powerful helps too. Your personal encouragement does make a difference to me and so many others!

And, CC and I want to help you to keep helping yourself, your health and happiness, with your own ongoing RxExercise experiences.

CC’s Mission emphasizes the importance of ongoing, year-round athletic goal events for helping each of us stay focused on a brighter future, and for many of us to make a more motivated comeback from health challenges.

Worthy goals get us beyond our health challenges. So, CC now offers 20 goal events through the year to help thousands of us to train, race and live well beyond life’s challenges!

Therefore, I also invite you to join me, Coach Jeanne, and all CC’s challenged & able athletes, to walk/run any of our 20 CC Challenge or Holiday RxEx Celebration Annual Events in 2009:
1. To walk any/all of our CC Events at Bethel U indoor track races or Como Lake 5ks in St Paul.
2. To walk/run as a CC RxEx Ambassador to a Great Ambassador Destination Event.
Learn about CC opportunities for you to be more RxExercise Active in 2009 at CC’s excellent web site.

I sure hope you’ll join us soon at any of our unique CC Events where we celebrate the Power of RxExercise improving so many lives, especially the lives of challenged athletes.

Visit CharitiesChallenge.org regularly to learn about CC’s growing RxExercise Programs/Events.

Please call me anytime at 612-245-9160 or e-mail GaryWestlund@CharitiesChallenge.org so we may cheer one another on to keep up our RxExercise and thereby live well beyond life’s challenges.

* “At this time of the rolling year” is from Charles Dickens’s _A Christmas Carol_; a simple phrase that reminds me to look back with happy memories, and forward with a hopeful vision. And, imagine! Dickens was a vigorous walker who appreciated the healthy value of his daily RxExercise. In this Christmas classic, he tells how Scrooge’s cheerful, caring and loving nephew, “…had so heated himself with rapid walking in the fog and frost…that he was all in a glow; his face was ruddy and handsome; his eyes sparkled…” Yes, Dickens knew the power of RxExercise to lift hearts, health and hopes.
